One more thing...

Forgot to mention it in my Dubai post yesterday, but the other thing I've learned about Dubai is that they have really fantastic chicken in grocery stores here. I found the chicken that I got from my butcher in Melbourne to be far superior to the chicken I cooked with in the US, but the chicken here in Dubai blows Melbourne chicken out of the water. It's ridiculously moist and tender, even in preparations that have a tendency to potentially dry the chicken out. Given that I go through about 6 pounds of chicken every week in my daily non-traveling life (which I have been told is crazy and/or strange), awesome chicken is sort of exciting to a kid like me...

I'm getting a kick out of the grocery stores here, too. They have really fabulous bulk spice sections, and one called Spinney's even has a special Pork Room for us non-Muslims who might want to throw together some Carnitas for our friends who've been away from Mexican food for too long... Am I the only person who thinks grocery-shopping (particularly in new cities/countries) is super-fun? (I suspect I'm one of the only people who finds washing dishes super-fun... but it totally is...)

hehe...like the chicken-talk.. are the chickens sold live over there? or frozen? live chickens here (hong kong)are ridiculously delicious as well! :) they are so chewy & juicy and also full of flavor (melbourne chickens taste unfresh to me (& sometimes had the refrigerator-y taste)...or rather..abit tasteless...) :(

by the way, grocery-shopping in new cities is super awesome? second that!! hehehe...i think it's THE best way to learn about a new culture!

hey you know! i started to make my own yogurt since i came here! & i strain the liquid off the european yogurt to make greek.. (so, runny yogurt on a muslin cloth in a colander. let it sit for about 2 hrs...and it's greek yogurt!) hehe greek is almost half the volume of european.. ;)

We haven't picked up any living chickens here. I'm going to check where the chicken is imported from (everything in the grocery stores here tells you where it's from) when we go shopping today... I will definitely have to go on a quest to find good chicken when I get to Boston...

Even with their comparatively mediocre chicken, Melbourne does indeed have some amazing yogurt... especially the Greek yogurt... Good improvising with the straining of the European yogurt! ;-D

that is a very nice picture of a buff orphington I must say. hmmm your talk of great chicken makes me ashamed that we eat the foster farms... sigh, oh to be able to make informed food choices! I guess though, that if we somehow developed a palette here at my house our food costs would go through the roof!

I'm having fun this morning getting caught up on some of your posts.

Dude, I used to eat the frozen Tyson chicken breasts from Costco when I was in the US... Can't beat the price, but now I know how much quality I was sacrificing for those savings... I guess I'll have to find a good butcher with reasonable prices when I get to Boston.

Ignorance is definitely (financial) bliss on such things... ;-D
