On Thursday night, Stanley and I hit the Royale Nightclub in Boston for an awesome show from The Walkmen. AA Bondy were the main opening act and were pretty kick-ass, but The Walkmen were fan-freaking-tastic. The last time I saw The Walkmen, it was in a small club (The Middle East) and the acoustics were awful. I was a bit worried about this venue because the first (unmemorable) opening act sounded pretty bad... Lots of loud instruments, no audible vocals. AA Bondy sounded much more balanced, so I had a little hope, and then The Walkmen sounded amazing.
We were right next to the stage, which is always nice (although Hamilton Leithauser is tall enough that you could see him from anywhere in the room...). I was next to the lady who took these picture, in fact:
They played almost all of my favorite songs from You & Me, rocked out to The Rat (which I believe they may be contractually obligated to play at every concert), and made every track they played from the new album, Lisbon, sound far better and more energetic than I would have expected.I love The Walkmen an inordinate amount, and I loved being able to see them perform a full set at a venue with good acoustics. Can't wait for the next time they roll through Boston...
